GRAND BLANC, Mich. (WNEM) - A strike could be looming at a Genesee County hospital.
Hundreds of nurses could be headed to the picket line if a deal isn’t agreed on between Teamsters Local 332 and Henry Ford Genesys.
The vote is currently in the hands of the union members.
Right now, the union tells TV5 RNs and case workers are voting on a “final best offer”. If it’s voted down, it could signal a possible strike.
Teamsters Local 332 represents about 750 employees who are waiting on a contract.
In May 2024, the union came to an agreement with Ascension, which previously owned the hospital. However, because Henry Ford Health has taken over operations, Union President Dan Glass tells TV5 a successor agreement is needed with the hospital.
Glass said negotiations have been ongoing since April, and leadership has met with the hospital at least 40 times since then. A big point at the bargaining table has been staffing and nurse to patient ratios.
While they haven’t shared what was in the latest offer publicly outside of the vote, Teamsters has recommended a “no vote” to membership.
“The biggest problem with this contract is that we don’t see an avenue where it’s going to recruit or retain nurses when you have a competitive market here in Flint, you’ve got obviously a couple other hospitals within 15 minutes,” Glass said. “This contract would be, in my opinion, substandard to what they offer, which leaves open the door of the possibility of our RN’s leaving for better working conditions and better benefits.”
A spokesperson for Henry Ford Health sent this statement to TV5 on the negotiations:
“We believe the contract Henry Ford Genesys Hospital nurses are voting on this week reflects our deep respect for the compassion and teamwork they show every day. A “yes” vote in favor of the contract is in the best interest of our nurses, our patients, and the long-term financial stability of Genesys Hospital.”
“It is our great hope that our team members will accept this offer, but we want the community to know that should a strike occur, the hospital will remain open— delivering the same exceptional care patients have come to expect.”
If a strike does happen, the hospital will remain open.
Voting runs through Wednesday evening. The union will begin counting votes around 8 p.m., before releasing details about the next steps.
